Our client Siemens has just launched a web special on the topic of urban metrics, entitled “Taking the measure of the city”. It explores the important theme of collecting numbers and data as a basis for urban development in a digital age.

Primafila correspondents researched a series of stories for this special feature, including our senior editor Chris Findlay’s interview with renowned urban planner Jan Gehl. Our correspondent Ron French met with Patricia McCarney, President and CEO of the World Council on City Data, for a conversation about gathering city statistics based on the ISO 37120 standard; and Primafila senior editor Barbara Simpson spoke with political theorist Benjamin Barber, who argues that mayors should have a stronger voice on the global stage.

Our author Peter Jaret portrays Los Angeles and a blueprint for revamping its aging infrastructure. Ingo Petz talked to Implenia expert Alar Jost about Building Information Modeling, a new methodology in the construction industry. In Berlin, Moritz Gathmann visited Südkreuz station, an experimental lab and showcase for mobility solutions. And finally, we show how the Siemens City Performance Tool (CyPT) is helping municipal decisionmakers to measure their city’s performance, using the examples of Helsinki, Minneapolis, and Shenzhen.

A German version of this web special can be found here.
