«79 Roses» – Memorial concerts: music and poetry 79 years after Auschwitz

In the spirit of reconciliation, 79 Roses is a powerful and lively musical experience set in the contemplative surroundings of four Swiss cities. 79 years after Auschwitz, a sub-formation of Christian Fotsch’s Roma music group Ssassa, virtuoso Sinti violinist Markus Reinhardt (the great-nephew of Django Reinhardt) from Cologne, Germany, Jewish singer Omer Nevo and Swiss disabled rapper Sarita Duracell will perform five concerts in St. Gallen, Lucerne, Zurich and Schaffhausen from September 5 to 9, 2024. As in previous years the concerts will be played, sung, celebrated and danced in cloisters at all four locations. This year’s program is an inspired symbiosis of music and literature, with short readings of poetry and literary sequences from the last century up to the present, selected by Viviane Egli. The readings take up the theme of music from these cultures and are interpreted into subtle and virtuoso playing by the 79 Roses ensemble, led by Chrisitan Fotsch. Primafila is sponsoring the concerts for the fourth time.

The memorial concerts are a non-profit project with additional support from the Ernst Göhner Foundation, Migros Culture Percentage, the Swiss Interpreter Foundation SIS, SUISA, the Aargau Board of Trustees, the cities of Lucerne, St. Gallen and Zurich, and the cantons of Lucerne and Schaffhausen. The program for 80 Roses at the beginning of September 2025 is already in planning.

• September 5 at 18:30 in the cloister of the Monastery of St. Catherine in St. Gallen.
• September 6 at 18:30 and in conjunction with the Friday evening devotion in the cloister of the Franciscan Church of St. Mary in Lucerne.
• September 8 at 14:00 and 16:30, two concerts in the Grossmünster cloister in Zurich.
• September 9 at 18:30 in the All Saints abbey in Schaffhausen.
